No injuries in Greenville church roof collapse

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Greenville City Fire Department dispatch said crews responded to a structure collapse at a church Sunday morning.

Officials said the roof at the Upstate Church Haywood on Laurens Road collapsed around 7:30 a.m. Church officials said that no one was inside the church and no one was hurt during the collapse.

“Everybody is safe. We’re praising God for that. The Lord really took care of us,” Upstate Church Haywood’s Teaching Pastor Dallas Wilson said.

Upstate Church Lead Pastor Wayne Bray said that around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, he received a call from a production team member that the worship center ceiling was cracked and buckling. Bray said that he and about two dozen other church leaders moved chairs and supplies from the worship center into the gym ahead of Sunday services.

Wilson shared in a social media video around 1 a.m. Sunday that services would take place in the gym and that small group activities were cancelled.

“Service was joyful. The people of God were so happy to be in the house of God. They know we’re not defined by a building,” Wilson said.

Bray said that services will continue in the gym until the worship center is repaired.

“We relocated temporarily to the gym today, but that’s really going to be semi-permanent under these circumstances,” Bray explained. “There’s not really another option. Ironically, it provided more space.”

Bray said that Sunday morning, the church also had people assigned at doors to prevent anyone from entering the damaged parts of the building.

While the church works to pick up the pieces, Wilson said they’re staying hopeful.

“This isn’t closing us up. We’re still open for business on Sunday morning. We believe that this is just the enemy trying to slow us down.” Wilson said.
