Auburn fire destroys apartment building that was being built

An apartment building in Auburn, one of two being built next to each other, has been destroyed by a massive fire that started late Sunday night.Firefighters were dispatched to the construction site at 138 Mount Auburn Avenue shortly after 11:10 p.m. and arrived within three minutes, finding heavy flames on all four floors of one of the 80-unit buildings.Crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the other four-story apartment building. Officials said both apartment buildings were in various stages of active construction. The Auburn Fire Department said the blaze went to a fourth alarm, and a total of 13 departments and more than 100 first responders either responded directly to the scene on Mount Auburn Avenue or provided coverage in the city.Firefighters said flying debris started multiple spot fires on the ground at surrounding properties, and crews closely monitored the roofs of nearby commercial structures — none of which caught fire.No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire.The State Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation into the cause of the fire.The section of Mount Auburn Avenue between BJ’s and Gracelawn Road was closed to through traffic all of Monday morning, although access was allowed to most of the businesses in the area.At about 12:30 p.m., the Auburn Police Department announced that section of Mount Auburn Avenue had reopened to all traffic.
